If you’re a Band A electricity customer – meaning you’re supposed to get at least 20 hours of light daily and pay the highest tariff – here’s some good news:
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered nine electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to compensate customers in 557 streets across Nigeria because they failed to give the promised power supply in April 2025.
What This Means:
- You may be owed compensation if your area is listed and you didn’t get up to 20 hours of electricity daily in April.
- Compensation could come in two ways:
- Electricity credit (e.g., more units)
- Or better supply going forward
The DisCos Affected:
- Abuja (AEDC)
- Eko (EKEDC)
- Port Harcourt (PHED)
- Kano (KEDCO)
- Kaduna (KAEDC)
- Ikeja (IE)
- Ibadan (IBEDC)
- Benin (BEDC)
- Enugu (EEDC – required to improve service, not necessarily compensate yet)
Notable Areas to Get Compensation:
Places like CBN HQ, Sahad Stores, Area 1 & 2, National War College, Chinese Embassy, NERC HQ and even the Defence HQ are on the list – meaning this affects both ordinary Nigerians and big institutions.
Why This Is Important:
- NERC increased Band A tariffs by over 300% last year, promising at least 20 hours of power daily.
- Yet, many areas are still experiencing poor or erratic supply.
- Now, if a DisCo didn’t deliver, they must either compensate or downgrade your area to a lower band (with a lower tariff).
Also Happening:
- Some areas will be downgraded to reflect poor supply (less than 20 hours).
- Some others will be upgraded to Band A if their power supply improved.
